Research Abstract:

Among the factors contributing to the success of Israeli technology startup companies are effective business networks utilized by Israeli ventures. While the value creation and the positive contribution of networks to business success are documented in various studies and theories, recent studies have argued that not all networks provide positive contribution. Furthermore, some studies have argued that networks impact can be negative and can impair performance. The controversies surrounding the role of foreign networks and their contribution to venture success provide the framework for this research. Network alliances will be examined while trying to determine what characterizes networks of successful ventures. While examining network attributes, approach to networks, and network utilization, emphasis will be given to network alliances with domestic and foreign actors and the role and contribution of foreign networks (networks affluent with foreign actors) will be evaluated.

The expected contribution of this work is in several folds. The embedded knowledge and experience of a unique community of Israeli entrepreneurs that have demonstrated outstanding success will be captured and light will be shed on the ways networks are built, maintained, and utilized. Findings related to strategic approach and foreign networks are likely to have theoretical implications on networks, management, and business strategy theories. Identifying networks and networking aspects that positively contribute to success can provide practical implications and guidance to stakeholders such as entrepreneurs, management, investors, and policy makers in their endeavor to improve entrepreneurial and regional development activities.
