Title of thesis: Effects of Leisure Activity on Occupational Stress and Burnout among
High-Tech Employees
The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of leisure activity on occupational stress and burnout among High-Tech employees.
The study included 69 participants (57% men) working in different roles in 5 High-Tech companies situated in the center of Israel.
The participants filled the questionnaires a week before going to a vacation. The questionnaires included 4 leisure dimensions: Leisure Satisfaction, Leisure Involvement, Perceived freedom and the need for leisure as detachment; 2 occupational stress dimensions: Stress related to negative work features and stress related to lack of positive work features; 4 burnout dimensions: BM, and the three MBI-GS indicators- Exhaustion, Cynicism and self-efficacy.
We hypothesized that there would be a negative correlation between leisure features: leisure satisfaction, leisure involvement, perceived freedom and occupational stress and work burnout. We also hypothesized that there would be a positive correlation between the need for leisure as detachment and occupational stress and work burnout. We also checked if there would be a correlation between the type of leisure activity and the level of occupational stress and burnout. Lastly, it was hypothesized that there would be a positive correlation between the level of occupational stress and the level of burnout.
The main conclusions of the study were:
A. There is a tendency of leisure activity to reduce occupational stress and burnout.
B. Sport activity was found as reducing burnout.
C. There seems to be differentiation between negative work features and lack of positive work features in their impact on the occupational stress experience.
Further investigation is needed for studying the causative relation of the impact of leisure activity on stress and burnout. Leisure activity characterized by perceived freedom and leisure satisfaction might be used to prevent the development of stress and burnout.
