The annual Israeli Scholarship Endowment Fund ceremony, held recently on the Marcus Family Campus and attended by over 200 donors, students and faculty members, was an excellent opportunity for representatives of the twenty-seven Israeli scholarship endowment funds to meet their student scholarship recipients in person. Over coffee and cookies, in a warm and family-like atmosphere, our students had the privilege of saying "Todah Rabah!" in person, and thanking the donors for helping them achieve their academic aspirations.
Speaking on behalf of all Israeli families who created scholarship funds at the university, Alex Wolf shared his thoughts on what it means to commemorate someone you love by granting the gift of education to students of BGU. His moving words appear below:
At the annual Israeli Scholarship Endowment Fund Ceremony, Mr. Alex Wolf of Beer-Sheva, Israel, who established a Scholarship Endowment Fund in memory of his wife, Zvia, spoke on behalf of the Israeli scholarship donors. Mr. Wolf spoke of how meaningful it is to commemorate a loved one by granting a scholarship in his memory. His moving words appear below:
Prof. Rivka Carmi, President of BGU, Prof. Jimmy Weinblat, Rector, Yaakov Affek, Dean of Students, donors, guests and dear scholarship recipients,
Every one of us, the families who have established scholarship endowment funds, has a beloved family member who is longer with us, whose memory we wish to commemorate. My wife, Zvia, of blessed memory, was an employee of BGU for over thirty years. She made Aliyah from Argentina on her own at age 19, for Zionist reasons. She was determined to create a future for herself here in Israel. Following a short study period at the Institute for Youth Leaders from Abroad, she began studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. After completing her undergraduate degree in Education and Hebrew Literature she completed her graduate degree in Library and Information Sciences and then began to work as a librarian, first at the Negev Nuclear Research Center, then at the Institutes for Applied Research of BGU and finally at the Aranne Library on the Marcus Family Campus. Throughout all her years as a librarian, Zvia emphasized the importance of serving the public, which she considered the central goal of librarians. This served as her guiding principle throughout her career. Her easygoing and friendly personality and her serious work ethics made her a beloved member of the library staff and a source of support to all the library visitors whom she assisted. To our great sadness, Zvia was taken from us at a relatively young age, and we lost a wife, a mother and a wonderful grandmother.
The Zvia Wolf Scholarship Endowment Fund, established by our family, is designated to help young female undergraduate students, who made Aliyah on their own as single women, to integrate into Israeli society and build their future here, just as Zvia did. As Zvia’s family, we see the scholarships recipients who have received our support in the past, as well as all those to receive them in the future, as women who will continue on Zvia’s path and we wish all of them great success.
We, the relatives and friends of all those who have been commemorated at this ceremony, know that they have inspired us to continue their journey, to look forward into the future. We feel doubly obligated: On the one hand, to remember our loved ones and commemorate them. And on the other hand, to move ahead into the future, just as they would have wanted us to do. Establishing a scholarship endowment fund is the best way to fulfill both of these commitments, because promoting education is the best way to ensure our future.
Therefore, I am certain that I speak for all families who have created scholarship funds, when I express my appreciation to the University scholarship program that enables us to perpetuate the memory of our loved ones in the most dignified manner possible. I would like to commend the university and thank you for allowing us to take part in this outstanding enterprise, and for creating and running a effective system for granting these scholarships to those who are most worthy of them.
Finally, I turn to you, the recipients of our scholarships, We, the families who have created the scholarship funds, wish you success in your academic endeavors. Your success is our success. The education you receive at BGU, one of the best universities in Israel, is the guarantee for the existence and the future of the State of Israel. I will conclude with a saying that seems the most appropriate to this occasion:
“May we take comfort in the building of Zion.”
 Alex Wolf
