Professor Ute Deichmann, Director, Jacques Loeb Centre

A historian of biological and biochemical sciences. She has published Biologists under Hitler (2006), Flüchten, Mitmachen, Vergessen. Chemiker und Biochemiker in der NS-Zeit (2001), in addition to numerous articles. She has edited (with Ulrich Charpa) Jews and Sciences in German Contexts. Case Studies from the 19th and 20th Centuries (2007), and (with Simone Wenkel), Max Delbrück and Cologne. An Early Chapter of German Molecular Biology (2007) in addition to numerous articles. In 1995 she was recipient of the Ladislaus Laszt Award of Ben-Gurion University and in 2005 received the Gmelin Beilstein Medal of the Society of German Chemists. She is also affiliated to the Leo Baeck Institute London, where she is Research Professor, and the University of Cologne, Germany, where she is head of the research group “History of the Biological and Chemical Sciences” at the Institute for Genetics.
